PLEASE DON'T FAVE AND RUN! I return comments! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Scratchboard: Traditionally, a thin white clay board covered in a layer of black ink. The black ink is scratched away with a sharp tool to expose the while clay below. Today, scratchboards can be very thin and come in a varitey of backgroud colors. The one I used is the traditional clay type.
Dragon on scratchboard. I was trying to go for the woodcut look. About 20 hours of total work. Yes, I realize the tail overall is...not that great
Also, a lot of the detail is lost because the scratchboard itself is just a leeeetle bit bigger than the scanner bed, so it sits on the edges of the scanner glass and is raised up a bit Bah! So every tiny detail I did in the scales doesn't show....
The detailing of the textures and shading is excellent! I really like how there are several different textures evoked in the image - scales, feathers, fur, claws/horns, and the glassy sharp gaze of its eye. I can see where the image is a little blurry by the edges, since, as you mentioned, the picture is bigger than the scanner. But even so, this is absolutely incredible!
I'm staring at the tail, and I don't quite see what makes you unhappy about it...

I really love the head of the dragon!
